Vacant Position Eliminations and Layoffs

As you know, we are addressing the university’s $10 million structural deficit through a combination of university and division-level cost savings. After much discussion with the campus, I decided last month to implement three university-level options: increasing the faculty and exempt staff contribution to health insurance, modifying our employee/dependent tuition waiver benefit and offering a faculty retirement incentive. When I arrived at UNC last summer, we all knew that our campus was struggling with enrollment and resources. The themes that quickly emerged as I began talking with people were that we need to focus on student success, resolve our $10M structural deficit, better articulate what makes UNC special, and work more collaboratively and transparently.
