Free to Students (F2S): (Re)Designing Courses with No-Cost Materials

Do you want to provide opportunities for more inclusive, responsive, and innovative teaching practices? Then this is the learning community for you!

This learning community will explore how to remove textbook cost barriers to students by transforming a course from costly commercial course materials to Free to Students (F2S) materials, including Open Educational Resources (OER) and library resources. Together, we will address the following objectives in a facilitated and supportive environment in order to transform a course:

  • Learn of the ways in which openly accessible materials promote student success 
  • Learn strategies and resources to facilitate the successful transforming of a course from commercial materials to F2S materials 
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of how to approach the discovery,  adoption, adaption, creation, licensing, and stewardship of open educational for a specific course 
  • Build your network with colleagues sharing a passion for open education  
  • Learn how to advocate for OER and free to students resources.  
Eligibility

Participants can be anyone who teach courses at UNC, including full- and part-time faculty, staff, and graduate students. Priority is given to instructors who  aspire to transform a FA 22 or SP 23 course  from commercial to all F2S resources. Space is limited (max of 12) and participants are selected on a first come basis.  

Requirements

Participants are asked to attend all meetings and participate in ongoing evaluation. This learning community meets twice each month from February 9 - April 20.

Spring 2022 Cohort

Facilitator: Jen Mayer, MLIS, University Libraries, PI on three grants from the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) supporting UNC faculty OER work and 2017-18 SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow.  

There will be one in-person cohort for Spring 2022. Dates are pre-determined.   Dates are pre-determined.  Cohorts will meet in Campus Commons 2200 from 9:00-10:30 am on the following dates:
