Equity-Minded Syllabus Design

10:30-11:45 am

The syllabus is often the first point of contact that our students have with us and our course. In this hands-on workshop, you will be taken through a step-by-step process that will allow you to reconsider your syllabus as a tool to support equity and inclusion. You will leave the workshop with an equity-minded syllabus that promotes student motivation and academic success.

How Learning Works

1:00-2:15 pm

Student learning is influenced by how faculty organize and present information. This workshop will provide a brief overview of principles of student learning and ways faculty can influence this learning. You will work in small groups to consider ways to modify your existing pedagogical techniques to better align with student learning.

Mitigating the Harmful Effects of Deficit Thinking

9:00 -10:00 am

Deficit thinking refers to the notion that students, particularly low income minority students, fail in school because they and their families experience deficiencies that obstruct the learning process (e.g. limited intelligence, lack of motivation, inadequate home socialization). In this session you will learn why this thinking is harmful to our students and strategies for shifting your thinking. You will hear about the personal experiences of UNC students through video interviews.

Meet & Greet with President Feinstein and Provost Anderson

President Andy Feinstein and Provost Mark Anderson will join us to discuss their hopes for the academic year, the future of UNC, and answer your questions.

Campus Tour (optional)
