Janine Weaver-Douglas, Director of the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center

June 07, 2021

I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Janine Weaver-Douglas as Director of the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center. Janine comes to us from the University of Georgia, where she was the Associate Director of Residential Programs and Services for University Housing. Janine has vast expertise in social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and her enthusiasm for this work began before her professional career and has continued to shape her professional work to ensure it is entrenched in her work with students. As part of Janine’s philosophy, she states the following: “I believe that all justice, equity, diversity and inclusion work, and ultimately the social change it begets, starts with the individual, and radiates outward, and it is with that approach that I make the most effort to create impact. As a practitioner, I believe that the currency of our work is relationships, and in order to advance the work of our industry, it must be done inside the context of relationships.”

I am delighted to work with Janine and the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion as we continue to address policies, programs, and practices across the institution and work toward the Rowing, Not Drifting 2030 strategic plan. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Janine. Janine's email address is janinemwd@gmail.com, and she welcomes emails prior to her arrival on campus. She will begin her work at UNC on July 1.
