Faculty and staff can connect to UNC's Virtual Private Network (VPN) from home using Cisco's AnyConnect client. To download the client, choose your system from the list below for directions. 

  • Windows
    Installing Cisco AnyConnect
    1. Open a browser tab. (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge)
    2. Go to https://vpn.unco.edu
    3. Select the Download button.
    4. Find the file in whichever location you saved it, then double-click it to run the installation.
    5. When the Setup Wizard starts, click Next, accept the terms of the license agreement, click Next, then click Install.
    6. Click Yes on the User Account Control window when prompted to allow the installation to continue.
    7. The installation should complete automatically, then click Finish.
    8. Restart the computer.
     
    Connecting to the VPN
    1. Click Start/Cortana and search for "AnyConnect", then click the app named Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
    2. You can also find this by clicking the Start Menu, click the Cisco folder, then click Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
    3. Enter vpn.unco.edu in the field, then click Connect. If you have privileged group access, verify that you have acceptable anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software installed, then use the appropriate URL below.
      • Privileged users:  vpn.unco.edu/Privileged
      • Tech users: vpn.unco.edu/tech
      • HVAC users: vpn.unco.edu/hvac
    4. Select the UNCO-Windows group from the drop-down menu and enter your UNC username and password, just as you did prior to downloading the client.
    5. Click OK to connect to the VPN. This may take a couple minutes and you may see pop-up notifications in the bottom-right of your screen.
    6. You will see the Cisco AnyConnect app running in the system tray in the bottom-right of the screen. You can click this icon to open Cisco AnyConnect and disconnect.
  • Mac
    Installing Cisco AnyConnect
    1. Open a web browser (Safari, Firefox, or Chrome) and go to https://vpn.unco.edu/+CSCOE+/logout.html?reason=12#form_title_text.
    2. Choose the UNCO-Non-Windows group from the drop-down menu, enter your UNC username and password, then click the Login button.
    3. The installer will try to detect ActiveX and/or Java, then you should receive a prompt to install it manually instead.
    4. Click the AnyConnect VPN link to download the file, which should be named anyconnect-win-4.5.02036-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.dmg.
    5. Find the file in the Downloads folder, then click it to open the file.
    6. Double-click the file displayed, which is named anyconnect-win-4.5.02036-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.pkg.
    7. When the installer starts, click Continue, click Continue again, click Agree to accept the terms of the license agreement, then click Install.
    8. Enter the User Name and Password for your Mac to allow the installation to continue.
    9. The installation should complete automatically, then click Close. When asked to move the installer to the Trash, click Move to Trash.
    10. Restart the computer.

    Connecting to the VPN
    1. Click your Applications folder, then click the Cisco folder, then click the app named Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
    2. Enter vpn.unco.edu in the field, then click Connect. If you have privileged group access, verify that you have acceptable anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software installed, then use the appropriate URL below.
      • Privileged users:  vpn.unco.edu/Privileged
      • Tech users:  vpn.unco.edu/tech
      • HVAC users:  vpn.unco.edu/hvac
    3. Select the UNCO-Non-Windows group from the drop-down menu and enter your UNC username and password, just as you did prior to downloading the client.
    4. Click OK to connect to the VPN. This may take a couple minutes and you may see pop-up notifications while it connects.
    5. You will see the Cisco AnyConnect app running in the top-right of the screen. You can click this icon to open Cisco AnyConnect and disconnect.

*Note: Beginning January 9, 2020 users will be migrated to Microsoft's Multi-factor Authentication (MMFA) system. Once you are migrated to MMFA, you will be required to verify your account before accessing the VPN remotely.
