Mac Encryption

FileVault is a software solution that automatically encrypts and decrypts the contents of your home directory on the fly. Files stored in your home directory are encrypted using a high-performance encryption algorithm that automatically encrypts and decrypts in real time, so you don’t even know it’s happening.

WARNING:
Improper use of encryption technology may render data useless and prevent use of or access to the data. Users should read and follow instructions carefully. In addition the Office of Information Technology has developed processes to help recover and protect the availability of encrypted data.

Note: Users must contact the Technical Support Center (TSC) at 351-4357 prior to enabling FileVault if they wish to use this recovery option. If users choose not to use this service UNC Information Technology is not responsible for any data loss or destruction that may result from not using these encryption technologies.
