UNC Classified Staff Yard Sale Keeps Items from Landfill, Helps the Community

Clothes on tables at past CSC Yard Sale

May 1, 2019

The annual University of Northern Colorado’s Classified Staff Council’s (CSC) Yard Sale is taking place on Saturday, May 11, which keeps items from the landfill, relieves students who need to leave items behind, and helps community members who depend on low-cost items each year.

According to CSC Secretary Heidi Romero, the number of items left behind from the dorms is equal to that of one full semi-truck. Typical items include clothing, linens, appliances, food, toiletries and cleaning items. JBS, a Greeley food-processing company, donates an empty semi-trailer each year for two weeks to use as temporary storage before the event takes place.

“It is a lifesaver for us since we can't store anything in Gunter Gym during finals week due to exams occurring in the gym,” said Margaret Kinney, chair of CSC.

Food is donated to the Bear Pantry, which helps college students facing food insecurity, and cleaning items are donated to the local non-profit, Catholic Charities. The Journey Christian Church in Greeley then picks up leftover items for another sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 18. They are using those proceeds to send a team to Guatemala to build homes in November.
