Education and Awareness

15th Annual National CyberSecurity Awareness Month

National CyberSecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is being held for the 15th year in October 2018.  #NCSAM is observed yearly and was created as a collaborative effort between government, education and industry to help ensure every American has resources available to help stay safer and more secure online.  Since its inception from the National Cyber Security Alliance and the United States Department of Homeland Security, NCSAM has grown in its ability to reach consumers, local businesses, educational institutions, seniors and young people across the United States of America.

The Stop. Think. Connect. ™ campaign is in its 8th year with its overall all concepts of “Keep a Clean Machine,” “Protect Your Personal Information,” “Connect with Care,” “Be Web Wise,” “Be a Good Online Citizen,” “Own Your Online Presence” and “Lock Down Your Login.”

Beginning in 2006, the University of Northern Colorado’s Office of Information Management and Technology (IM&T) has been involved with NCSAM running our own themes such as “Safety and Your Personal Information”,  “Identity Theft”, “Spam, Scams and Phishing”, “Tips on Social Networking”, “Device Encryption”, “UNC’s Computer Incident Response Team”, “Don’t be a Zombie about Mobile Security”, “Identity Theft”, “Sharing Files Illegally”,  “Don’t let P2P file sharing Haunt You”, “Don’t be the Weak Link”, “Protect Yourself”, “Are your P455W0RDS %StR0NG enough?”, “CyberAttacks” and “Are You a CyberAware Smarties or DumDum”.

This year for NCSAM, UNC will be focusing on Phishing. We will be sharing tips and tricks around what to watch for and how to not let a Phishing Scam Reel You In! Please follow the Office of Information Security Twitter account @UNCO_InfoSec for meaningful tips this month and throughout the year as we focus our CyberSecurity Awareness campaign around different themes and topics each month. In spring 2019, we will be hosting our 10th Annual Shred Fest for your e-cycling and secure document shredding needs! We look forward to seeing many ShredFesters right around Earth Day!

CyberSecurity is our shared responsibility! No single individual, department, business entity or government agency is solely responsible for securing the internet. When everyone learns a little more about how to secure their personal devices, home networks, “Internet of Things” connected smart devices, learn how to identify phishing and not click on the scammer’s links we are all better off!  Being #CyberAware, implementing stronger security practices, raising awareness, education our Seniors, Youth and each other will help our keep our digital society safer and more resilient to cyber-attacks.

Read more about cyber security at the https://StaysSafeOnline.org site and then browse over to our https://unco.edu/cybersecurity website for more information from your UNC Office of Information Security team. We have shared many great resources and links to helpful information for our UNC Bears Faculty, Staff, and Student family.

Once again UNC, Information Management and Technology and the Office of Information Security is being recognized as an NCSAM Champion organization. Champions include companies of all sizes, schools and school districts, colleges and universities, nonprofits and government entities, represent those dedicated to promoting a safer, more secure and more trusted Internet. In an ongoing effort to provide the highest level of technical support, the IM&T department is reminding everyone to please report all technical issues and requests through the Technical Support Center. Our Help.unco.edu page also provides system announcements and updates on any ongoing outages.
