FYI: Gift Card Scams Targeting campus!

UNC is being targeted by an iTunes gift card scam.

Reminder: All UNC business should be conducted only from official UNC mail addresses. Check who the sender is and if it is not from an @unco.edu address be wary of a scam. 

What is going on?

SCAM: A scam email is attempting to trick you into providing a good or service to the scammer

Following is an example of this Imposter Scam:

From: UNC Employee First Name <firstname.lastname.unco.edu@gmail.com>

Subject: Re: Urgent request

I’m in a meeting right now and that's why i'm contacting you through here. I should have called you, but phone is not allowed to be used during the meeting. I don't know when the meeting will be rounding up, And i want you to help me out on something very important right away from a store around and I will reimburse you back when you get back to office. Let me know if you can do this.

Are you a victim? What should you do? Following are 3 steps:

1st – Stop communicating with the person and if you are a victim of this scam contact the UNC Police Department at 970-351-2341.

2nd – Open a support ticket with the Technical Support Center!

We can then check to see if the email has any links as assist blocking the site and help you junk the message!

3rd – Did you purchase anything with a personal card expecting a reimbursement?

Visit: The Cybercrime Support Network site: https://FraudSupport.org this site was created by to provide assistance to both individual and small business cybercrime victims. FraudSupport.org will lead cybercrime victims through the Report, Recover and Reinforce process after an incident occurs.
