One of the world's leading volcanologists, his research on active lava flows has taken him to Indonesia, Iceland, New Zealand, Japan, Peru, Chile, Guatemala and Italy as well as to volcanoes in Hawaii, Alaska and Washington. He's published more than 20 papers on volcanic processes, including two in Nature, has presented at international volcanology conferences and has received grants from NASA to investigate the surfaces of lava flows on Mars and Venus in order to interpret the types of volcanic eruptions responsible for their formation. Anderson is part of a team that's assessing whether a laser ranging system can be used to monitor active volcanoes.
