UNC President Andy Feinstein presented the charge to his newly formed President’s
Leadership Council during the advisory group’s first meeting Tuesday, Sept. 4.
The council’s role will be “to provide advice, perspective and insight on matters
of broad institutional significance and to assist in the effective, responsive, and
informed leadership of UNC.”
Council members consist of the president’s cabinet and a cross section of campus representatives invited by Feinstein (see below). He
said creating the council opens up “an opportunity for a much broader constituency
to be involved” in “tackling significant challenges on campus.” The council doesn’t
vote, but will offer diverse perspectives and recommend campuswide strategies, tactics,
policies and practices for the greatest good of the university.
“This group is going to be effecting change on this campus,” he added. “What we’re
trying to do is leverage everyone’s collective insight and experience to do what’s
best for the university.”
After the introduction, Chief Financial Officer Michelle Quinn reviewed the four themes
that Feinstein previously shared in his fall welcome email. The themes of student success and the budget will be the council’s initial areas
of focus. Quinn also provided the council with information on using data in making
informed decisions on two related issues, enrollment and budget. Vice President of
University Relations Dan Weaver added that preliminary discussions to create a strategic
enrollment plan are getting underway.
“We need a plan that answers basic questions,” Weaver said. “It’s like a puzzle …
you have to put together to make sure it’s all fitting together and making sure we’re
the right size, the right mix of students (in state, out of state), different things
like that.”
The meeting concluded with brainstorming on how to engage campus in the process and
share information. As a starting point, recaps of the every-other-week meetings will
be provided in UNC Today and archived on the UNC news website.
