As of the time of this page's publication, there is still some uncertainty about when and how much SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for November will be paid to students and employees who typically receive SNAP benefits. These students and employees rely on SNAP benefits for sustenance.
For UNC students or employees who receive SNAP benefits and whose benefits have been delayed or interrupted due to the federal government shutdown, UNC has some enhanced food resources.
In response to the SNAP disruption, the UNC community has contributed $4,077 since Oct. 30 in support of Bear Pantry programs. Thanks to all who have donated
money, food or volunteer hours. These acts of generosity make a huge difference. For
those who have enough food and want to help fellow Bears in need, read to the end
of this article to learn how you can support those in need.
For those in need, visit the Bear Pantry webpage to learn more about on- and off-campus food resources for UNC students and employees.
If you have had your SNAP benefits interrupted due to the government shutdown, you
are temporarily additionally eligible to:
- Take up to 12 grocery and essential non-grocery items from the Bear Pantry each week (limit is normally 7 items), and/or to
- Request grocer gift cards as a supplement to the food offered in the Bear Pantry.
- To access these temporary benefits, complete this form, and staff will reach out with more information.
We do not expect that these temporary benefits will be able to replace all of the SNAP benefits that have been interrupted, but we think these benefits will provide meaningful support.
How You Can Help Other Bears:
- Consider a monetary donation to either the Bear Pantry or the Student Emergency Support Fund.
- Donate Food Items: We have placed food barrels at these locations.
- Visit this Bear Pantry webpage to see the items the Pantry most needs. Refrigerated items cannot be accepted.
- Volunteer at the Bear Pantry: We will need more volunteers until SNAP benefits are consistently flowing to program recipients.
