Undergraduate Advising 

The Department of English at UNC offers the English major with four emphasis areas: Liberal Arts, and Secondary Education (Language and Literature, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, and Special Education emphases). Minors in English, Film, and Writing are also available.

Graduate Advising

The Department of English offers a wide variety of graduate coursework in British and American literature, composition and rhetoric, creative writing, linguistics, pedagogy, literary theory, and film. We host or support three graduate programs: the M.A. in English, the M.A.T. in English Education, and a post-baccalaureate licensure program for secondary English education. On this page you will find details of the final projects and/or exams for the M.A. and the M.A.T. as well as upcoming courses in the English program.

English Honor Society

UNC’s Zeta Psi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, The International English Honor Society was chartered in April of 1988, under the sponsorship of Prof. Lloyd Worley. Since its chartering, Zeta Psi Chapter has three times won the international “Best Chapter” competition and has provided several regional and national student officers. Since its founding, Zeta Psi Chapter has had several members win top Sigma Tau Delta scholarships and internships. In recognition of its outstanding qualities, Zeta Psi Chapter has received the “Chapter of the Decade” award from the Board of Directors of the international Society.

Internships

Through the English program’s Writing Internship Program, students work for a semester with major companies and agencies, for which they receive academic credit. Internships are sponsored by the English program in conjunction with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students minoring in writing are encouraged to apply.
