Challenge Exam and Exemptions

Composition Placement Challenge Exam: We recognize that standardized tests are not always an appropriate reflection of student abilities. For that reason, we provide the Composition Placement Challenge Exam for those who wish to engage another opportunity to showcase their writing abilities. Students who would like to take the exam should set up an appointment with the Writing Program Administrator.

Advanced Placement Exemptions: Students who take the AP Exam in English Language / Composition or English Literature / Composition may be eligible. Visit the Advanced Placement info page of the Registrar’s web site.

CLEP Exemptions: A student may earn 6 credit hours (CO-1 and CO-2) by earning a score of 50 on the College Composition CLEP exam. For more information on CLEP exams at UNC, see the UNC CLEP policies.

International Baccalaureate: IB credit awarded may be used toward the 120-credit-minimum requirement for college graduation. See the IB Equivalencies page.
