Bear Network: Effective Virtual Interview Tips

To make social distancing more Bear-able and to stay connected to more than 134,00 UNC alumni around the globe,  the alumni association office is hosting a series of FREE virtual events called Bear Network Connections. 

Connect and engage with fellow UNC alumni, faculty and community members as they share their expertise on diverse topics. The Bear Network virtual events are recorded and published, so that our Bears can watch on demand anywhere and anytime.

Effective Virtual Interview Tips 

On May 14, the UNC Alumni Association had the honor of hosting alumna and human resources professional Ashley Valenzuela- Ruesgen. Ashley has expertise in the industries of higher education, mining, construction and retail. During the Bear Network virtual event, Ashley shared her expertise on effective strategies for virtual job interviewing during a COVID-19 job market. Below you will find a few of the tips that Ashley shared during the event. 

• First Impressions Matter! Make sure that you log in to your interview early, ensure the technology is working properly, find a quiet and secured location and always dress as is you were attending an in-person interview.
• Employers are relying on digital software more than ever. Be familiar and prepared to utilize the following- Applicant Tracking Systems, Teams, Skype and Zoom.
• Expect delays during your recruitment process. Companies are constantly changing and reacting to the constant changes around COVID-19. 
• Communicate regularly. During the COVID-19 job market, make sure you are communicating with your prospective employer about any interruptions that can arise. This may be a good way for you to find companies that align with your values.
