Bob and Bonnie Phelps Family CAP Awards

Championed by UNC friends Bob and Bonnie Phelps Family, the CAP Awards recognize students whose lives demonstrate an exceptional and exemplary personal commitment to:

  • Contribute… by volunteering time and personal skills, talents, abilities, experience and passion around issues in service to the community.
  • Achieve… by displaying a bias toward action and performance, overcoming obstacles and setbacks, and accomplishing goals.
  • Pay-it-forward… by impacting the lives of others in meaningful and positive ways through random and planned acts of kindness, caring, and “giving back.”

For the 2025-2026 scholarship year, the Bob & Bonnie Phelps Family CAP Awards recognized two students who met the aforementioned criteria with a $10,000 scholarship and award plaque.

For the 2026-2027 scholarship year, the Bob & Bonnie Phelps Family CAP Award will again recognize two students who meet the criteria with a $10,000 scholarship and award plaque which will be presented at the 2026 U-Engage Honors Banquet.

Carter Norris
History Secondary Education

Carter Norris has made a commitment to reimburse the mutual aid given to them. Carter is doing this by majoring in Secondary History Education with a minor in Special Education to reach their goal of becoming a teacher that can impact student lives. They say, “The CAP values represent the ideals that I would like to continue to move with, contribute to my communities, achieve my goals and the goals of others, and pay it forward to the next generations.” In all aspects of their life, Carter aims to ensure everyone has an equal voice and opportunity. As a teacher Carter is “truly dedicated to developing an equitable and compassionate classroom for all students that enter through my door. My goal is to make all students feel heard, seen, and supported.”

Biological Sciences

To Yasmin Berumen Martinez help means,”if you have the skills, you use them to help others.” As they pursue a career as a physician assistant, this value drives their passion for service. Volunteering with organizations like Solida de Sol and César Chávez Sunrise Bus has allowed Yasmin to empower others through English as a Second Language classes and support vital health programs for agricultural workers. These experiences remind them of the importance of giving back, especially to communities like the one that supported their family. Yasmin says they, “plan to combine my passions for science and medicine with a lifelong commitment to service. Whether through patient care, community outreach, or mentoring, I aim to honor the lesson my parents taught me: to contribute where I can, strive for achievement, and pay it forward”
