Reminder from Bear Central: Policy Exemptions are used for any university-level policy such as LAC adjustments. The Course Adjustment form is used for department-level substitutions to the major or minor plan.

9:05 Welcome and Hello (Chris Freeman and Hayley Blackburn)

9:10 SOS and DOS Updates (Shane Borah (Senior Case Manager) and Dr. Colleen Sonnentag (Dean of Students))

  • Tuck Gardner transitioned out of AVP and started as a coordinator in Student Affairs
  • Student of Concern Report Process: create a wraparound of support
    • Changed for SOS form based on feedback. Once form is processed (daily) they provide as many resources to students upfront as they can. They are offered a consultation and meetings may be required depending on case. Add as much information as possible to help them identify resources
      • Advisors are included in the frequent referral pipeline
    • Have added support to challenges inside the classroom
    • Support for other things like eating behaviors, relationship concerns, and housing insecurity
    • Parents can submit concern reports on behalf of their student (refer them to the form if they call). They also require a Release of Information through DOS-specific release.
  • Website has a wide range of resources
  • When students are nervous about the Dean of Students title, make sure to refer to it as Student Outreach and Support and the CARE team. The conduct process is outlined in the Bear Code and receive different notices and a hearing.
    • Action Item, read the student code of conduct. This is an educational process by design.

9:30 Probation Reminders (Hayley Blackburn)

  • Readmission Appeals for Fall can be submitted any time before August
  • Suspension Appeals from Spring grades will follow the standard timeline (May 25)
  • 30% completion for our large P1 cohort this Spring.
    • Added additional stress/self-care resources
    • CEBS & MCB lead in their portion of students completing it
    • Colleges will receive a mid-term data packet about probation in the next two weeks

9:35 Professional Development Updates (Hayley Blackburn)

  • 25 different topics loaded into NV
    • Over the summer, I will be adapting its language to give slightly more direct answers
    • Total Sessions are down this Spring compared to Late Fall—70% actually
      • Housing FAQS, Appeals, and Academic Standing questions
    • Advising Quick Bite Blog continues to publish topics
      • Reach out if you want to contribute a 600-word post on a Skill
    • Closing the Canvas Shell on March 1 (Tuesday)
      • I have a copy of your LEAD certificates and the current activities saved. But after March 1, you will not have access to the shell until I relaunch at the Advising Retreat in May
      • Updates include shorter modules of content, clarity in what you are earning in each topic module, better alignment to NACADA competencies, ladder of development with this year’s theme being a the Hero’s Journey.

9:40 Bears Central Updates

  • Bursar, Geri Landwehr (10 min)
    • Final HERF money is being sent out based on need. Refunds will be generated this week (2/25/2022). There is no more federal money for the summer
    • Bear Pay Enrollment has ended for the Spring
    • No news for Holds being listed for 1,500 for Fall threshold
  • Financial Aid, Marty Somero (10 min)
    • Disaster Relief funds are being used to supplement where CARES money is ending
    • Student Employee of the Year is a virtual event and we can nominate those students
    • Verification is the biggest stumbling roadblock to students getting their aid. It is an audit BUT there was relief from the Feds on that
    • Have new data to see the profile and stats about our students and Financial Aid
    • In-State Tuition Application will open on May 14 with the deadline 1-week prior to the semester start.
  • Registrar - (Charlie Couch and Michelle Heiny, 15 min)
    • Policy Exemptions are used to look at a university policy. Need a rationale and substantial information provided. Timeline = a few weeks
      • LAC courses—asks for changes between old and new LAC courses
      • Sharing major and minor courses or upper-division electives
    • Course Adjustments are used when it is just a change within the curriculum of that department (major or minor). Timeline = a few days after department approver
      • Substituting courses
      • Waive a specific courses
      • Waive number of hours—but we NEVER waive the 120 total
    • Registration Opens on April 4 with PINS and Schedules out for view
    • Community College System has changed the numbering system to 4-digit numbers
      • A cross-walk table will be shared to help understand

10:15 Aims2UNC Updates (Jacob Sutton)

  • Aims opened the new Welcome Center. All the student services, advising, and financial aid offices are located in the Center.
  • ~43 students expected to transition for Fall 2022 from Aims2UNC specifically
    • They are working on their pre-registration checks like Immunization and Updated Transcripts and FAFSA/Scholarships
  • Working with students to attend the Destination Days. Most days are planning on the March Session. They want to have everything set up. Most of the students will be able to register in that April 11 window
  • Many students will be working to finish graduation requirements over the summer and transcripts won’t be available in the last week of May or even finishing the AA over summer. Use the institutional transfer guides. Jacob offered to pull unofficial transcripts if needed.
  • They are actively recruiting for the program for the fall cohort
  • Launched a new Aims2UNC program site. This does not replace the UNC hosted site with the application and such. Aims hosted: https://www.aims.edu/programs/aims2unc-transition-program
  • Aims tuition is increasing

10:30 Updates from college advising leads

  • CEBS (Jennifer Lieber)
    • No updates beyond the standard course offerings
  • HSS (Chris Marston and Paige Johnsen)
    • No longer offering the French and German programs. They will teach out all the current majors and students. May not be able to teach out all the minor. Please connect those minors to Paige ASAP. No longer offering FR/GR below 300-level
    • Still offering Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. Students have opportunities for prior learning credits
    • Appreciate steering students towards ENG 225 as the option for ENG 123
    • New faculty in History of Africa (yay) and a new course on LGBTQ history
      • HIST 250 and MAS 225 are newly approved LAC options
    • English approved a Writing, Editing, and Publishing major
    • Collaboration with AGES Connection (Anthropology, Geoscience, Environmental Science). An advisor cheat sheet will be provided for the incoming cohort.
    • There are always plenty of LAC options. Try to guide students away from rigid plans and be more flexible in the order they complete their LACs to the open courses and seats
    • SSRC is co-advising with Africana Studies. Contact Jasmine Mitchell for support
    • New SFS will be starting: Lucas
  • NHS (Beckie Croissant)
    • Offering a S/B LAC online this summer
    • Brewing Science will now offer courses in both fall and spring. They can take the BREW 170 with or without the lab for the LAC and then can be used an elective in the minor
    • Math has new emphasis areas in Applied Stats, Computer Science, Data Science
    • NHS has updated all 4-year plans to include the LAC categories
    • Send any student interested in people or animal health care professions to Andrew for help on the post-graduation steps for those fields
  • MCB (Rosa Law)
    • Has an International Business course has IS
    • BA 150 Foundations of Business Thought has MS
    • Personal Finance is a great general course and has a scholarship opportunity
  • PVA (Katie Runkel)
    • Art History will be asych for the fall
    • Art Appreciation
    • Typical theater LAC. There is an Art of Acting for all majors added to LAC
    • Most likely not offering Musical Styles in Context, which is a music minor impacting issue
    • Music for Cartoons and Beats & Grooves are new Music LACs: IS and MS
