Students experience stress, anxiety, and other mental wellness challenges at increasing rates. The UNC Counseling Services Center offers a range of support for our Bears, including you as staff.

Messaging for Students (how to explain counseling to your advisees)

“Counseling Services can always provide some support or service, but it might not be individual counseling. They want to help you and will find the service for your situation and needs. Fill out this form to start getting support.”

Action Items for Advisors:

  1. Bookmark the consultation linkto share with students. All services (including group workshops) begin with the in-take form and individual consultation.
  2. Submit referrals through SOS for advisees with mental health concerns that impact multiple aspects of their campus life. Counseling works closely with DOS.
    • Note: Test anxiety or very specific support would be a direct referral to counseling (via students completing the in-take form)
  3. Look through theself-learning and skill resources to check in with your mental wellness.

What to Expect

Counseling Services use the Stepped Care Model, which begins with an Initial Consultation.

Initial Consultation Form

After completing the form, the Counseling Center will contact the student to schedule the initial consultation. That session will be 30 minutes to determine recommendations for service. Most of the initial appointments are via telehealth unless the student needs otherwise.

There is a a waiting list for Individual Therapy, so students may be referred to other services. Counseling considers risk-level, income, and other factors for priority in the waiting list.

Counseling Services are mostly free to students and staff receive 10 sessions per year. For pay services can be partially covered by the UNC Student Health Insurance.

Service Types

  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Therapy every 2-3 weeks for short-term and solution focused help
  • Limited Couples Therapy (both partners must be students)

Counseling Groups

The Group Therapy options are themed workshops to help students learn and practice skills related to mental and emotional wellbeing.

The groups begin at set points (most start during weeks 4-6 in the semester) and others are rolling starts through semester. Students must be referred into a group through the initial consultation process.

  • Anxiety Workshop: 6 Session Series to educate about anxiety and introduce coping and managing skills
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: Semester Long group for skills in behavior changes
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Survivors: 7 Week skill group for survivors of sexual assault
  • Interpersonal Process Group: Opportunity to practice connecting with other people that can help with family, social, and romantic relationships

Liaison Relationships: The counselors also hold hours in student centers across campus (Athletics, CHE, HRE, Cultural Centers, GSRC). Each center runs different hours and appointment structure, so help your student connect as appropriate.
