The Need to Know for Action with Clery

The Clery Act is about transparency to help the University be accountable for campus safety. As advisors, we are key partners in gathering the information and also helping potential students access the data.

Action Items from this Post:

  1. Program the UNC Police number into your Phone: 970-351-2245
  2. Bookmark the Crime Log
  3. Bookmark the ASAP Website to assist assault survivors who disclose to you
  4. Bookmark the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report—and read through it so you are informed about crime and safety at UNC

How to Report:

  • 970-351-2245 for post-crime reporting.
  • 911 for in progress crimes (is gets routed to campus PD)

What to Report:

  • Criminal Offenses
  • Hate Crimes
  • Dating Violence, Domestic Violence, Stalking
    • Need to know the relationship between the individuals to differentiate types of crime
  • Weapons, Drug, or Liquor Law Violations

Information Requested:

  • Description of the incident
  • When it occurred
  • When it was reported to you
  • Location of the crime
  • Name of the victim/survivor
    • This information is never included in the public record keeping.
  • Identities of suspects and/or witnesses if known
  • Use of any weapons

The Reporting Process:

  • You alert your supervisor or call UNC PD directly to report
  • The Clery Officer (Rebecca Thompson) review the report and follows up for more information as necessary
  • The Daily Crime Log is updated, and the incident is recorded
  • Annual information is published in the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
