College marketers (ahem, people like me) are always talking about finding the perfect fit. That’s why it’s so important to visit, after all.

For some people, finding the right fit means finding a place where you feel comfortable, valued and supported.

For some people, finding the right fit means finding a place where your values will be challenged and where you’ll grow and change and understand yourself better as a result.

For some people, finding the right fit means simply finding a place that has the right major and is the right distance from home.

But here’s the catch: No college is a PERFECT fit.

In case you’re like I was, imagining college basically as a movie set where you walk between ivy-covered buildings laughing with your perfect roommate on your way to the big football game (because you definitely don’t procrastinate and end up stuck in the library on a Saturday), here’s a reality check.

(OK, I know you’re probably not that naïve. Just being honest here.)

College is not going to always “fit.” Some students go to college and have a hard time being away from home or a hard time commuting. Some struggle academically. Some struggle to fit in and find their people. You will probably experience disappointment at some point, whether in a class, a club, an internship or a friend group.

College isn’t perfect because life isn’t perfect. There are times to stick it out and grow through the tough stuff. There are times to transfer or take a break to invest in building a healthy support system.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t assess your values now and do the best you can to find a college that you think will be a good fit. Then roll with whatever life hands you. Be determined to get the most out of your experience possible.

I’m rooting for you!

P.S. My college experience wasn’t the fairytale I imagined, of course, but I did take the opportunity to study abroad. That was an absolutely incredible experience made possible by my university. Sometimes, it all works out!
