Police Department Mission

The dedicated public safety professionals of the University of Northern Colorado Police Department believe that it is important that we share the following information with students, parents, faculty, staff and visitors. In this way we acknowledge our obligation to be open and transparent to the community that we serve.

We have utilized the mnemonics P-O-L-I-C-E and R-I-G-H-T to embody our Guiding Principles and Values. These are more than just words. They have real meaning to the members of the UNC Police Department, and serve as a testament to our dedication as public safety professionals.

Guiding Principals - POLICE

P - Passion and Purpose: We are passionate about our role as public safety professionals and embrace our purpose to protect and serve our community.
O - Obligation and Ownership: We are members of our community and accept ownership and our obligation as stewards.
L - Leadership and Loyalty: We are leaders in our community and loyal to the noble Mission of the University and Police Department.
I - Innovation: We embrace our public safety role, which emphasizes solving problems and making a difference in our community. We accomplish this by participating in active collaboration and pursuing excellence in everything that we do.
C- Compassion and Courage: We will be courageous in the face of adversity and danger. We will treat people in a compassionate manner, especially in times of crisis.
E - Ethical and Excellence: We will perform our duties in an ethical manner, striving for excellence in everything that we do.

Central to our Mission and Guiding Principles are Values that lead us to do the RIGHT thing, for the RIGHT reason and to make RIGHT decisions.

Values - RIGHT

R - Respect: We believe that all persons have the right to be treated fairly, in a dignified, courteous and equitable manner. We take an active role in understanding and working within the great diversity of our community. Furthermore, we embrace our solemn obligation to protect the rights of others, and endeavor to make appropriate decisions without favor or malice.
I - Integrity: We are accountable for our actions and will preserve our integrity. We will not compromise our principles or values. We believe that our individual and collective organizational character is defined by honesty and trust.
G - Goal Oriented: We know that our commodity is service. What we do, what we provide, who we are and what we are prepared to do must translate into value.
H - Honor: We take our responsibility to protect and serve our community seriously. We will represent our profession, our institution and department with dignity, humility and courage.
T - Teamwork: We are actively involved in Community Oriented Policing, working together and with others to achieve our Mission.

UNC PD personnel subscribe to a noble law enforcement Code of Ethics

The people of Colorado have conferred upon Peace Officers the authority & responsibility to safeguard lives & property within Constitutional parameters. Because of this special trust and confidence, we expect members of the UNC Police Department to make the following commitments:

  • As a Law Enforcement Professional my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice.
  • I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn, or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confined to my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.
  • I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence, and never accepting gratuities.
  • I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession ... law enforcement

Biased-based Policing Prohibition Statement

The UNC Police Department prohibits biased-based policing. We embrace the wonderful diversity of our great Nation, the State of Colorado and our Institution. Biased-based policing, including racial profiling is unethical & unacceptable. The Department will not tolerate the racial or ethnic profiling of any group and prohibits any policy, procedure or practice that constitutes profiling any person based on race, skin color and/or ethnicity for the purpose of police contact, traffic stops or investigation.
