Dear Colleagues:

We hope you have read yesterday’s message about UNC’s plans to re-open in the fall. As we have started to map out the logistical considerations involved with returning in the fall, we have been increasingly optimistic that we will be able to do so in a way that helps to preserve the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff. We will continue to work with state and local officials, including public health authorities, and will remain in compliance with all official orders and guidelines.

As we know well from our experience this semester, anything could change in a moment’s notice. For that reason, we ask that you still begin to plan for the possibility that conditions require us to continue teaching online or that our reality lies somewhere in between being fully online or fully -in-person. We know that your preparations for the fall take time and effort—all the more so when you are asked to plan for multiple scenarios. We will make every effort to consult with faculty through the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and other means and share information with all faculty in a timely manner as we proceed with our planning. We will also continue to make resources available through the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning to assist with your preparations for different instructional modalities.

We also understand that some of you have reasonable concerns about returning to in-person instruction in the fall because you live with underlying health conditions that might make you more vulnerable to COVID-19. Circumstances may require reasonable accommodations to be made to ensure the health and safety of such individuals as we make these transitions, but we anticipate these exceptions to the norm to be fairly limited. If you are concerned that returning in the fall might pose specific risks to your health and safety, we ask that you work with your dean to begin discussing appropriate accommodations in the coming weeks and remain flexible as the situation evolves. We anticipate having further guidance for all of you in the coming weeks and months that will help you to better understand risks and prevention strategies.

Finally, as we transition from the spring semester into the summer, many faculty and staff have asked to have access to their offices to retrieve materials that they need for their summer teaching, professional activities during the summer months, and planning for the fall. Working with Facilities Management and UNC Police, we have established a schedule for limited access to buildings over the next two weeks so that people can access their offices. Because the campus is still closed, access to each building will be facilitated during specific dates and times. While we ask that you plan to access your office during these assigned times, if they do not work with your schedule you can still access your office by contacting UNC Police at 970-351-2245 to arrange an alternate time with them.

You should plan to complete your visit to campus as quickly as possible—upon entering the building, please collect any materials you need from your office, then promptly leave the building. We also ask that you observe social distancing and wear a cloth mask at all times while you are on campus. To limit the risk to our custodial team, restrooms will be unavailable for use. The schedule of building access dates and times is below.

Thank you for your continued flexibility as we navigate transitions to continued online instruction this summer and re-opening the campus in the fall.
