IRS Data Retrieval
Use the IRS Data Retrieval Option When You Complete Your FAFSA
Paying for college is easier than you think...
Expedite the process by using the IRS Data Retrieval Option
The U.S. Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service have worked together to develop a process called the IRS Data Retrieval Option to simplify the steps that students and families must take each year to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Beginning February 4, 2013, students and parents who have submitted their 2012 IRS tax return will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option to transfer tax information to the 2013-2014 FAFSA. We strongly encourage you to select this option when you complete your FAFSA online. This option will streamline and expedite the processing of your financial aid application. According to the IRS, electronically filed tax return information will be available online from the IRS site in 1 to 2 weeks after the return has been filed. Data from paper tax returns takes much longer, from 6 to 8 weeks.
To successfully use IRS Data Retrieval Option you must:
1. Have a federal tax return filed with the IRS
2. Have a valid social security number
3. Have a Federal Aid Personal Identification Number (PIN)
You will be UNABLE to use IRS Data Retrieval Option if:
• Your marital status changes after December 31, 2012
• You filed “married filing separately”
• You filed an amended return
• You filed a foreign tax return
If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you chose NOT to use this option, or you changed the IRS data, you will be required to request a tax transcript from the IRS and submit it to the financial aid office. Personal copies of tax returns can no longer be accepted.
Advantages of Using IRS DATA RETRIEVAL OPTION:
By using the IRS Data Retrieval Option, you significantly lower the chances you are selected for verification which will save you time and expedite the application process.
If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you used the IRS Data Retrieval Option, you will not be required to submit any tax return documentation.
