IRS Data Retrieval Tool

IRS Data Retrieval Tool is offline until the start of the next FAFSA season (October 2017).

The IRS and U.S. Department of Education announced that the Data Retrieval Tool used on both the fafsa.gov and StudentLoans.gov sites will be unavailable until the next Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) season. This means the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will not be available for students and families to use until October 1, 2017 when the 2018-2019 FAFSA becomes available.

Students should not delay completing the FAFSA. In lieu of using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will manually enter you and/or your family’s 2015 tax information.

Remember, you will use your 2015 tax information for BOTH the 2016-2017 AND 2017-2018 FAFSA.

Use the IRS Data Retrieval option when you complete your FAFSA. Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will expedite the FAFSA process. The U.S. Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service have worked together to develop a process called the IRS Data Retrieval Option to simplify the steps that students and families must take each year to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students and parents who have submitted their 2015 IRS tax return will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option to transfer tax information to the 2017-2018 FAFSA. We strongly encourage you to select this option when you complete your FAFSA online. This option will streamline and expedite the processing of your financial aid application. If you have not yet completed your 2015 Federal Income tax form, please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information.

To successfully use IRS Data Retrieval Option you must:

  • Have a federal tax return filed with the IRS
  • Have a valid social security number
  • Have a Federal Student Aid Identification Number (FSA ID)

You will be UNABLE to use IRS Data Retrieval Option if:

  • Your marital status changes after December 31, 2015
  • You filed “married filing separately”
  • You filed an amended return
  • You filed a foreign tax return

If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you chose NOT to use this option, or you changed the IRS data, you will be required to request a tax transcript from the IRS and submit it to the financial aid office. Personal copies of tax returns can no longer be accepted.
