IRS Data Retrieval Tool

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

Remember, you will use your 2016 tax information for the 2018-2019 FAFSA.

Use the IRS Data Retrieval option when you complete your FAFSA. Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will expedite the FAFSA process. The U.S. Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service have worked together to develop a process called the IRS Data Retrieval Option to simplify the steps that students and families must take each year to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students and parents who have submitted their 2016 IRS tax return will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option to transfer tax information to the 2018-2019 FAFSA. We strongly encourage you to select this option when you complete your FAFSA online. This option will streamline and expedite the processing of your financial aid application. If you have not yet completed your 2016 Federal Income tax form, please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information.

To successfully use IRS Data Retrieval Option you must:

  • Have a federal tax return filed with the IRS
  • Have a valid social security number
  • Have a Federal Student Aid Identification Number (FSA ID)

You will be UNABLE to use IRS Data Retrieval Option if:

  • Your marital status changes after December 31, 2016
  • You filed “married filing separately”
  • You filed an amended return
  • You filed a foreign tax return

If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you chose NOT to use this option, or you changed the IRS data, you will be required to request a tax transcript from the IRS and submit it to the financial aid office. Personal copies of tax returns can no longer be accepted.
