Sports Coaching

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science with an emphasis in Sports Coaching program's mission is to provide the opportunity for students to enhance their coaching knowledge, teaching, and expertise while improving their existing coaching practices.

Sports Coaching majors pursue a diverse body of knowledge in sport sciences that includes;

  • Exercise physiology
  • Sport pedagogy
  • Adapted physical activity
  • Bomechanics
  • Motor learning and development
  • Sport administration and law
  • Sport psychology
  • among other areas 

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to maximize their own coaching strategies and practices, and become leaders in their prospective sporting fields, by supporting the eight current coaching domains outlined in the National Standards for Sport Coaches (National Association for Sport and Physical Education [NASPE], 2006).

Who you will learn from

Scott Douglas, Ph.D.

Dr. Douglas was a top world-ranked wheelchair tennis player, 3-time Paralympian and bronze medalist, United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified P1 Professional, and the current Program Coordinator for the Sport Coaching program at the University of Northern Colorado. He was also a team member on the Lakeshore Storm, two-time National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) national champions (2001 & 2004).  

Research interests: Coaching expertise and coach development in Paralympic sport; and perceptions of coaches with a disability.
