Professional/Academic Experience

Sean Johnson has been involved in various roles within the brewing industry for over a decade. He joined the UNC Brewing Laboratory Sciences team in 2017. With a background in research fields of hop compound utilization and barley analyses, he is happy to advise students who wish

to pursue research topics in the world of brewing within the chemistry department. He also collaborates on the recipes produced by the Northen Colorado Brewhouse, UNC’s 7 Bbl. Brewhouse.

Research/Areas of Interest

Exploring how breweries implement Good Brewing Practices (GBPs), Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Hazard analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCPs). From understanding this implementation, how can brewing education be tailored to prepare students for success upon entering the brewing workforce.

Studying the effects on humulone isomerization and how varying factors effect bitterness in hops.

Exploring alternative methods for common beer analyses to reduce cost impact of implementations of quality labs in the brewing industry
