Education

The Institute’s educational objectives focus on those individuals providing cancer rehabilitation services to survivors.  The Institute has implemented an educational curriculum for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in exercise science here at the University of Northern Colorado.

Students in the program enroll in a unique cancer rehabilitation course in which they study basic cancer biology and exercise physiology as it relates to cancer. In addition, these students “shadow” trained Clinical Cancer Exercise Specialists working with cancer survivors, and are provided the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with patients. Upon completion of this cancer rehabilitation elective course, students are given the opportunity to complete a semester-long internship at the Institute.

These students are then prepared to work directly with cancer patients, are well qualified to pursue employment in the cancer rehabilitation field, and are educated on the basics of implementing a cancer rehabilitation program. Learn more about UNCCRI Internship opportunities.

Continuing Education

The University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute also conducts continuing education courses and workshops. These workshops and courses focus on improving functional capacity and quality of life in cancer survivors through individualized exercise interventions. These workshops are attended by physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and exercise physiologists. We currently offer Level 1 and Level 2 Clinical Cancer Exercise Specialist certifications.
