Licensure Requirements By Program
The U.S. Department of Education requires UNC to ensure its professional licensure programs meet the educational requirements for licensure in the state a student is located at the time of initial enrollment. This page provides information regarding UNC professional licensure programs. Each program lists the states UNC does or does not meet the educational requirements for licensure. Each program also lists the states that UNC has not determined whether it meets the educational requirements for licensure. UNC continues to research individual state requirements for each program.
All applications for admission to a licensure program are reviewed by the state of the prospective student to determine whether UNC meets the educational requirements for licensure before an admission decision is made for initial enrollment. If a prospective student’s application is from a state UNC has not made a determination, the student will not be accepted for admission until UNC determines that it meets the educational requirements for licensure in the prospective student’s state. If a prospective student applies for admission to a UNC onsite program offered at a Colorado location, UNC will review Colorado educational requirements for licensure.
Often states have additional requirements for licensure outside the educational requirements UNC is required to meet. To better understand licensure requirements, please review the State Licensure Requirements page and our State Licensure Boards page.
UNC understands that professional goals and plans change over time. If a student is interested in pursuing licensure in another state following initial enrollment, please email Licensure@unco.edu. UNC will help the student determine whether their program meets educational requirements for licensure in the other state(s).
Please note that candidates for educator licensure may need to first obtain a Colorado license and then apply through reciprocity to be eligible for licensure in some states. Additionally, some states may require applicants to have relevant years of full-time experience for advanced teaching or administrator licenses. Please contact Dr. Charles Warren, University Licensure Officer at Charles.Warren@unco.edu with any questions regarding licensure in K-12 settings.
We have not yet determined whether UNC licensure programs satisfy educational requirements for licensure in U.S. territories or freely associated states. If you would like us to review information for a specific state or territory, please contact us we will gladly assist you.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Graduate Certificate
Licensure Requirement:
There are many types of nursing licensure in each state depending on an applicant’s education and experience. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure requires a minimum of a master’s degree and prepares individuals for various advanced practice designations, such as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). APRN license applicants are often required to successfully complete a state-approved nursing program accredited by a national nursing accrediting organization, such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation (CCNE), successfully pass a national examination in a specialty area, and complete additional experience or clinical preceptorship requirements, if needed.
Please note that many state nursing boards have additional requirements for out-of-state students who want to complete clinical placements in their state. In these situations, the nursing program must apply directly to that state’s nursing board and secure approval before the student can conduct a clinical placement. Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling/Therapy M.A.
Licensure Requirement:
Requirements for licensure as a marriage, couples, and family counselor/therapist vary across states. States often accept a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy (COAMFTE), or the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), toward educational requirements for licensure. Most states allow applicants to apply through a coursework evaluation, at times for an additional fee, if their program is not accredited by the state’s preferred accrediting body.
In addition, states require passage of an appropriate national examination and completion of a minimum number of supervised practicum/internship hours before applicants can accrue postgraduate experience towards licensure as an independent practitioner. Please contact Licensure@unco.edu for more information or assistance in reviewing state requirements.

Nursing B.S.N.
Licensure Requirement:
There are various levels of nursing licensure in each state depending on an applicant’s education and experience. In most states, Registered Nurse (RN) license applicants must successfully complete a state-approved nursing program accredited by a national nursing accrediting organization, such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation (CCNE). Applicants must successfully pass a national examination, such as the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), to pursue licensure as an RN.
The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) creates uniform licensure requirements for RN licensure across all states that have fully implemented the compact. Applicants who complete a state-approved program in any NLC state will satisfy these requirements in all compact states. Please note that many state nursing boards have additional requirements for students who want to complete clinical placements or take distance education coursework through an out-of-state program. In these situations, the nursing program must apply directly to that state’s nursing board and secure approval before the student can conduct a clinical placement or receive instruction.
