Gunter the Bear
Mascot
Gunter the Bear served as UNC’s mascot starting in the late 1990s, succeeding Bentley
the Bear. The school adopted its first bear mascot in 1925, replacing our emblem as
“The Teachers.” Gunter retired in 2003, when Klawz the Bear was introduced, and he
now oversees the Archives Reading Room. He enjoys having his picture taken with visitors,
so feel free to stop by during open hours.
