The Geography & GIS Department invites and encourages students to study abroad. At UNC, students can take Geography & GIS, Liberal Arts Core, or any number of courses in other disciplines at international schools in over 60 countries around the world.
After deciding if study abroad is right for you and choosing a school to attend, it is important to talk with your Geography & GIS advisor to get approval for transfer credits to the UNC Geography & GIS major.
UNC Exchange Programs are ideal for Geography majors. Opportunities to study in Australia, Botswana, Canada, Fiji, Finland, Ghana, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and the UK, among other destinations, are available.
UNC offers 100s of study abroad programs in more than 60 countries around the world. Although geography majors do not have to take courses in geography while abroad, the programs listed above are recommended for those seeking credits in geography. While it is not an exhaustive list of programs from which you can transfer geography credits to UNC, these schools provide instruction in English, are relatively low cost, and in the past have provided a variety of geography courses that will transfer.
An Internship Program is available for students interested in GIS or planning. Internships represent a valuable learning experience for students and it is the department's intention to offer qualified, advanced majors a variety of internship opportunities.

Geography GIS Club
The Geography GIS Club is a UNC student organization open to students interested in geography. The goals of the organization spread through an array of subjects relating from social sciences to the physical environment. The general conception is that geography is the identification of places on maps, but in truth, it just a fraction of the scheme of things. Geography is everything people are doing in their everyday lives, from the social tendencies and interactions in a certain place to the physical change of the earth’s environment, whether natural or manmade. These change every day, so geography is an evolving field which everyone has a say in, whether they are conscious of that or not. In short, the Geography GIS Club exists to spread the true depth of Geography, a subject that has been misrepresented by the memorization of capitals and place locations. Club members also participate in National Geography Awareness Week and attend professional conferences.
