Clinical Academics (Years 3-4)

Year 3 – Clinical Rotations

Clinical Rotations Orientation Week begins the clinical training phase for UNC COM medical students. After orientation, students begin four-week rotations across a range of clinical settings, including the following “Core” clinical rotations:

  • Family Medicine I and II
  • Inpatient Medicine
  • Medical Specialty
  • General Surgery
  • Surgical Specialty
  • Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics
  • OB/GYN

Additionally, each student will also have one four weeklong “selective rotation” which is an elective rotation within the established UNC COM clinical network. An elective is also scheduled which is typically outside the UNC COM clinical network.

  • Selective Elective

These rotations give students the chance to care for patients, work alongside experienced healthcare teams, and apply their classroom learning in real-world settings. Each rotation helps students build the skills and confidence they need to be competitive applicants for residencies and future competent, compassionate physicians

Fourth year clinical rotations include:

  • Near the conclusion of the 4th year, UNC COM students return to campus to participate in a one week   Ready for Residency Course   putting the finishing touches on preparation for the first year of their residency.
