Foundations of Interpreting

The Foundations of Interpreting program with Betty Colonomos was a seminar series focused on components of the Integrated Model of Interpreting. In a low-stress, highly interactive online environment, participants learned how to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities beginning in consecutive mode and moving to simultaneous modes of interpreting. The curriculum was centered around small groups working on skill development, such as text analysis, back translations and collaborative interpreting, and tools for understanding and improving interpreting processes. Participants developed the language to discuss the interpreting task using non-evaluative, non-judgmental language with peers and integrated strategies for continued self improvement.

    The Foundations of Interpreting program served to increase the number and quality of mentors in legal settings.

    Result information will be added as the Foundations of Interpreting program is wrapped up.

    The program was open to any interpreter who completed the Legal Interpreter Training or Mentor Training programs.

  • Program Map

    The Foundations of Interpreting program included six (6) seminar sessions that meet for three (3) hours each. Participants meet within their affinity groups: Deaf, Coda, and Hearing. The curriculum expanded on the foundational knowledge of the Legal Interpreter Training and Mentor Training programs. 

    The Program Map for the Foundations of Interpreting program served as an “at-a-glance” reference guide that participants used to see the overall flow for program's modules.

  • Time Commitment

    The curriculum totaled 20 hours over the two-month training.

*Successful completion of this training does not provide endorsement of the participant's language fluency or skills as an interpreter.
