Thinking About a Career in Audiology? UNC Can Help You Get There!

What exactly does an audiologist do?

Audiologists are healthcare professionals who specialize in evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing hearing, balance, and related auditory disorders across the entire lifespan, from newborns to older adults. They work with patients who have hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), balance disorders, auditory processing challenges, and other auditory and vestibular-related conditions.

Audiologists provide evidence-based interventions, which may include hearing aids, cochlear implants, auditory training, vestibular rehabilitation, and counseling. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, private practices, research labs, and industry.

Beyond technical skills, audiologists support patients and families, helping them navigate communication challenges, improve quality of life, and maintain overall health and well-being.

In short, audiologists combine scientific knowledge, clinical expertise, and compassionate care to help people hear, communicate, and engage fully with the world around them.

Why enter the field of audiology?

Audiology is meaningful, growing, and versatile profession that is constantly evolving. With a rapidly growing aging population and growing awareness of hearing and balance disorders across the lifespan, demand for audiologists is on the rise. Ranked #20 in Best Healthcare Jobs by U.S. News, audiology is projected to grow 10% from 2021–2031, much faster than the average compared to other occupations.

Why UNC's Accelerated AuD program?

UNC’s revised accelerated Au.D. program launched in Summer 2024 to offer world-class audiology education in just 3 years. Our program is designed to get you into the workforce faster while maintaining high-quality clinical training and reducing the financial burden of graduate school.

What is different about the 4-year AuD training model compared to the Accelerated AuD training model at UNC?

Most AuD programs around the country are 4 years long. UNC’s Accelerated 3-Year AuD Program model is designed to help students enter the workforce faster without sacrificing the depth or quality of their education or clinical training. Our unique training model focuses on efficient, immersive, student-centered learning, combining classroom instruction, hands-on clinical experience, and real-world training from the very first year.
How it works:
  • Year 1: Foundational AuD Coursework + Hands-on clinical experience + simulation lab + start your Doctoral Scholarly Project (DSP)
  • Year 2: Advanced AuD Coursework + Off-site clinical internships in schools, hospitals, and clinics in the Denver-Metro and Northern Colorado Region + complete your Doctoral Scholarly Project (DSP)
  • Year 3: Full-year clinical externship/residency at prestigious sites like Mayo Clinic, Children's Hospital, UCHealth, Mass Eye and Ear, and more

Why it matters:

The accelerated AuD model at UNC allows you to finish your Au.D. in 3 years, reducing tuition costs and entering the workforce sooner, while providing world-class clinical training, foundational and specialty coursework, and research experience you would receive in a traditional 4-year program.
