Professional/Academic Experience

Hello! My name is Giovanni Esparza (Gio for short) and I am from the small town of Berthoud, Colorado. I am a History for Secondary Education Major with minors in Anthropology and Special Education. After getting my Bachelor’s degree I would like to continue with education and pursue both my Masters and Doctorate in History. After I achieve this I would like to be a high school U.S. History teacher for a few years in order to gain enough experience to become a professor of history at a university. I am a first generation student and these seem like high hopes but I’d say I’m doing pretty good for myself so far! Something unique about me is that Giovanni, John, Juan, Sean, and Ian are all the same name but in different dialects and I was named after my father! Can you guess his name? Anyways, I am a leader on campus and am very thankful for the many leadership opportunities I have been given through my time here at UNC. Some include being a class leader for University 101, being a facilitator for Lead On for the last two years and participating in Research Day two years in a row. I am excited not only for the things I am going to learn while in the McNair program but also the opportunity to grow as a person!
