Biography

My name is Matthew DeSelm, and I'm originally from a small town in Iowa called Oskaloosa.  I moved to Colorado in 2009, and it was honestly one of the best decisions that I've made.  I absolutely love it here. The scenery, the weather, and the people are amazing, and I'm now proud to call Colorado my home. After working briefly as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, I decided to come to UNC starting in the spring of 2014.  I'm currently working on a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, as well as a minor in biology.  I've been involved in biology-related cancer research for the past year, and I now plan to delve more into the chemistry side of things.  My goal is to obtain a Ph.D. and to pursue a career in chemistry or biochemistry research.  I absolutely love learning, so I could definitely see myself working at a university someday, but if my career path takes me in a different direction that's okay too.  I'm definitely excited to be a part of the McNair Scholars Program this year, and I'm looking forward to all the opportunities that it will bring.
