Michener Library Collections

  • Current Reading

    The Current Reading Collection is located in an alcove near the main entrance of Michener Library. The collection includes approximately 400 fiction and non-fiction books of current interest. Books may be checked out for 3 weeks. The Current Reading Area also features new acquisitions to the general Michener Library collection.

  • DVD, Video

    In Michener Library, the DVD and videotape collections are located on the 2nd floor. Video materials are listed in the online library catalog, and can be checked out for 1 week at the main desk on the 1st floor of Michener Library.

    The Skinner Music Library also houses DVD and videotape titles.

  • Government Publications

    The Government Publications collection is located on the lower level of Michener Library. 

    For reference service, please see the staff at the main desk on the 1st floor. For in-depth individualized assistance by appointment or for scheduling instruction sessions for classes, contact Jen Leffler at jennifer.leffler@unco.edu, or by phone at 970-351-1543.

    Materials may be checked out at the 1st floor Main desk; they are due 1 week before the end of the semester. Reference materials may not be checked out. Many current items are made available electronically and are accessible through the Libraries online catalog. Items physically located in the lower level collection are in a variety of formats, including print, microfiche, microfilm, and CD-ROM.

    Types of materials in the collection include:

    • Official decisions and proceedings of government entities
    • Government agency reports
    • Statistical data
    • Historical documents
    • Consumer information
    • Small collections of foreign and international items published by organizations such as the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the World Health Organization

  • K-12 Teaching Resources

    The K-12 Teaching Resources Collection consists of materials used in K-12 education, such as:

    • textbooks
    • kits and other media materials
    • computer software
    • curriculum guides

     
    The collection is located on the 2nd floor of Michener Library. The materials are listed in the Libraries online catalog, where they have the location designation MICH K-12 and call numbers beginning with the letters LT. They may be checked out at the main desk on the 1st floor of Michener Library.

  • Periodicals

    Most periodicals (newspapers, magazines, and journals) are available in an online format accessible through the Libraries web site. The titles that are available in a paper format are located on the second floor of Michener Library. The Skinner Music Library also maintains a periodicals collection. Both online and paper titles are listed in the online library catalog.

    In Michener Library, current issues of titles in the paper collection are shelved alphabetically by title in the Current Periodicals Area, with the exception of the most current issues of a selection of news and popular magazines located in the first floor News Room, near the Access Services desk. Older issues of many titles are kept in bound volumes, or on microfiche or microfilm on the second floor.

    The Michener Library Periodicals Area also has several microform collections, including the ERIC documents collection of educational materials, the Evans' historical microform collection, the Library of American Civilization, the English Short Title catalog, and microform copies of dissertations. Please inquire at a service desk for more information about using these materials.

  • Tests

    The Test Collection contains items that are collections of questions which, together with their answers, purport to measure various physical and mental states or abilities. Other terms applied to these items include measurements, scales, questionnaires, surveys, instruments, or inventories.

    This collection is located behind the main desk on the 1st floor of Michener Library. Items in the collection are listed in the Libraries online catalog , where they have the location designation MICH TESTS.

    The ability to check out tests from this collection is restricted to “appropriate personnel and to students in training” as dictated by the American Psychological Association’s Statement on the Use of Secure Psychological Tests in the Education of Graduate and Undergraduate Psychology Students.

    In addition, some require instructor permission to use, and these are indicated on the library catalog record in the status box with the notation “AVAILABLE (RESTRICTED).”

    Included in the collection are:

    • Individual tests in print format
    • Collections of tests in books associated with specific fields or topics

  • Youth Collection

    The Youth Collection contains children's and young adult books and videos. This collection is located on the 2nd floor of Michener Library. Materials in the collection are listed in the Libraries online catalog, where they have the location designation MICH YOUTH. They may be checked out at the main desk on the 1st floor of Michener Library.

    The books are divided into the following separate sections:

    • Big Books - large books for use with groups including nonfiction, easy, and Caldecott titles; located on a rack by the short shelves
    • Easy - picture story books arranged alphabetically by author; located on the short shelves
    • Caldecott Award winner and honor books - picture books honored for their illustrations; located on the short shelves by year of award
    • Newbery Award winner and honor books - chapter books honored for their overall quality; located on the short shelves by year of award
    • Nonfiction - picture and chapter books arranged by subject as designated by the Dewey Decimal Classification system; located on the tall shelves with oversize nonfiction located on the short shelves.
    • Fiction - chapter story books arranged alphabetically by author; located on the tall shelves
    • Other award winning titles, such as Americas Award, Coretta Scott King Award, and Colorado Children's Book Award, can be located in the collection through use of guides available in the area

  • Archives & Special Collections

    Archives & Special Collections is located in the lower level of Michener Library, off from the main staircase.

    University Archives serves as the central repository for UNC history.  It preserves and makes accessible primary source material relating to the administrative, academic, legal, fiscal, social, and cultural interaction of individuals, departments, and programs of the university since its founding in the late 19th century.

  • Skinner Music Library

    Skinner Music Library is located on the east campus of UNC at 10th Avenue and 17th Street. The building, featuring almost 15,000 square feet of patron-accessible floor space, opened in October 1997 and was named in honor of Dr. Howard M. Skinner on May 6, 2005.

    Available equipment includes:

    • 32 PCs equipped with CD/DVD players, providing access to music and general research databases
    • 3 Macs equipped with specialized music software, providing access to music and general research databases
    • 7 CD players
    • 4 LP turntables
    • 2 cassette decks
    • 2 reel-to-reel tape players
    • 7 video players (5 VHS, 1 Beta, 1 LaserDisc) with monitors

    Skinner Music Library has the second largest music collection in Colorado. The library has a particularly strong collection of jazz recordings (over 12,000), complementing the School of Music's renowned Jazz Studies program. The library provides access to slightly more than 124,000 items, including:

    • 51,000 scores
    • 30,500 CDs
    • 22,000 books
    • 16,000 LPs
    • 1,700 DVDs and videos
    • Access to approximately 4 million tracks of music via streaming audio

    Unique collections include:

    • Almost 1,000 recorded UNC concerts and recitals
    • 6,900 individual songs ("sheet music"), mostly from the early twentieth century
    • The Henry T. Ginsburg Collection of salon orchestra music sets
    • Unpublished and/or manuscript works by J. DeForest Cline, Emmy Brady Rogers, Jean Miller, and Marta Teodonno
