Elevators During an Emergency
If you are stuck in an elevator:
- Remain calm
- Use the emergency button in the elevator or contact University Police at (970) 351-2245
Generally, elevators should not be used in emergencies because of the possibility of becoming trapped inside in the event of power outage, mechanical failure, or due to the possibility of other hazards. However, exceptions may occur when the elevator is operated by the Fire Department or University Police.
Explosions
In the event of an explosion or similar emergency, take the following action:
- Immediately take cover under tables, desks, etc., which will provide protection from falling glass or debris.
- Call 911.
Give the emergency dispatcher the following information:
- Location
- Area where explosion occurred
- Cause of explosion, if known
- Injuries
- Make sure the dispatcher has all of the information needed.
Evacuate the area as soon as it is safe to do so, following established building evacuation procedures.
Gas Leak
When emergencies arise that could involve gas equipment within the University, or if you suspect a gas leak, always notify University Police at (970) 351-2245.
In the event of a gas utility failure, the type of disruption - planned or unplanned - will dictate the type of response. In an unplanned disruption that creates an immediate threat to life, structure or other property, Facilities Management and the Greeley Fire Department will be dispatched to manage the threat.
Facilities Management will manage the process of restoring gas utilities to their normal state. In the event of a pipeline accident or leak, personal safety is the first priority.
Utility Outages
- If a power outage occurs in your office or building, remain calm.
- To report a minor, localized power outage, call Facilities Management at (970) 351-2446.
- Help those in your area who may be unfamiliar with your space.
- If in an unlighted area, cautiously move toward an area with emergency lights.
- If in an elevator, stay calm. Use the emergency button or phone to contact University Police at (970) 351-2245.
- Evacuate the building if instructed to do so.
Downed or fallen power lines should be treated as live and dangerous, and you should stay away. If you encounter a fallen power line, keep yourself and others away, and call 911.
To prepare before an emergency, be familiar with your building’s evacuation plan, and keep a flashlight available in a location you can find easily in the dark.
