Around the world, video games are one of the top activities for individuals to do in their free time. It is a way for people to build a community or to get away from the stress of everyday life.
Over the past two months, one game in particular has taken the world by storm where you see clips and gameplay of it whenever you open up social media. The name of the game is called Marvel Rivals.
The action packed player versus player shooter game, or PvP as some call it, was created by NetEase Games. It allows gamers the opportunity to step into the shows of some of their favorite heroes and villains from the franchise. The game in essence is like capture the flag as a group of players have to capture a cart of objects and move it through the map to earn a victory.
Since the launch back in December, Marvel Rivals has seen as many as 20 million users. In comparison to another player versus player shooter Overwatch, it sees only seven million.
Overwatch won game of the year in 2016 and was the game to play next to other titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends and even Call of Duty. While the two games are similar in a way, gamers like UNC senior Jackson Fry, understands the appeal that Marvel Rivals has compared to the other.
“It combines a universe people already like with Marvel in a game,” Fry said. “It's easy to pick up and it’s fun to play with friends.”
Fry isn’t the only person to see it that way as Nicolas Weary, a second year history major, also shared the same sentiments towards the game.
“I think Marvel Rivals is more fun,” Weary said. “With it being Marvel, it connects to a bigger audience.” He also added that the game has potential to be bigger than Overwatch with all the features and storylines that it could offer.
With new chapters and events like the most recent Darkhold battle pass, introducing new characters, alternate costumes and communitTitley challenges, the developers are finding ways to keep players engaged and invested.
The hype behind the game is real and as of right now, it doesn’t look like it will be fading away from the public eye any time soon. Until another PvP shooter comes along, nothing will be rivaling Marvel Rivals.
