Arctic Blast Comes to Greeley

Colorado is in for a prolonged cold snap this weekend, a weather event meteorologists identify as an “Arctic Blast”.

Starting this week with deceivingly warm weather and temps in the fifties up until Thursday, the cold front will bring about 3-6 inches of snow to Denver on Friday. The snap will set in on Saturday with expected temperatures to stay below double digits through Monday.

Greeley was hit with similar weather extremes during Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2024, with this year’s intensity pushing the snap into the definition of an “Arctic Blast.” Scientists say the worsening of weather conditions is due to the continued warming of the planet, causing greater and greater extremes on both sides of the temperature spectrum.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Notice, and local authorities are urging residents to stay prepared and safe during the long weekend.

Residents are also encouraged to take precautions to avoid bursted pipes. Opening sink cabinets to help warm air circulate to them and setting faucets to a drip before leaving for an extended duration will both help prevent pipes from bursting.

Additionally, if you must travel in extreme weather, ensure you have an updated and stocked Emergency Winter Supply Kit for your car to stay prepared and safe.

For our bears here at UNCO, we recommend enjoying the long weekend by staying home, staying cozy, and watching Bear News’ first newscast of the semester!
