African Students United, or ASU, a student run club at the University of Northern Colorado is hosting its annual “Taste of Africa” at 6 p.m. on Feb. 1 at the Campus Commons Performance Hall. The event will include a series of cultural dances, both solos and group performances.
Since the beginning of the semester, the students have been choreographing dances and practicing hard to perfect their timing in time for the show on February 1. Practicing five times a week, dancers spend hours in the university’s rec center preparing.
The dances created by the students are created and themed based on specific countries, presenting a great variety of African cultures.
Beyond creating a dance, practicing and being around each other turned the group into a family. Senior member of the club, Seyna Gbaguidi detailed what makes the practices special.
“My favorite part is getting closer with my co–tastdancers,” Gbaguidi said. “Getting to see each other every day of the week and hanging out with one another. It helps us to draw closer and strengthen our bond and sense of community.”
Along with the performance, the event is catering food prior to the start of the show. Food will be served at 4 p.m. and the show is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the show will be sold both online and at the door. For any further information or questions, please visit the ASU website. Make sure to get your seats now to experience some great food and a sample of many historic African cultures.
