The University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball team won their 14th game of the season Saturday afternoon as they defeated Eastern Washington by a score of 68-62.

The victory pushed UNC’s record to 14-6 and moved them into third place in the Big Sky conference. Eastern Washington subsequently went to 10-11 and now sits at seventh in the conference. With the win on Saturday, the Bears now have 600 wins in the schools history.

Saturday afternoon’s game at Bank of Colorado arena was a back and fourth affair that ended up being tied at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. The Bears pulled away late in the fourth quarter outscoring the Eagles 24-18 and were led by redshirt junior Savannah Smith who scored 14 in the quarter.

Smith went on a personal 7-2 run to start the fourth quarter and finished the game with 24 points on 7-17 from the field, 2-10 from behind the three-point line. Even though her shot was falling from behind the arc, Smith still has a huge contribution for the Bears and played almost all of the game with a swollen right eye. The injury came in the first quarter when Smith and teammate Savannah Scott collided going for a rebound, both returned at the end of the quarter though and played the rest of the game.

Scott had a nice game of her own, pouring in 15 points on 4-12 from the field. Both Scott and Smith are now averaging 16.9 points per game and continue to be a big part of what the Bears do offensively.

Violet Kapri Morrow, who scored 24 points on an efficient 10-18 from the field, led Eastern Washington on offense. Morrow did a great job keeping the Eagles alive and was a big part of the teams 10 fast break points. Eastern Washington will now head back home to take on Big Sky opponent Sacramento State on Thursday February 1st.

UNC will also be back in action on Thursday, as they’ll head to Montana to take on the Big Sky Conference leading Montana Grizzlies.
