This is an exciting time for school psychology. Employment opportunities abound both in the public schools and in faculty positions at many universities. Employment opportunities also exist in non-traditional settings (e.g., hospitals). In fact, recently many positions in school psychology have gone unfilled.
Our program’s training philosophy is based on the scientist-practitioner, or Boulder model. The program places equal emphasis on science and practice components, training students to be consumers and producers of psychological research, and to apply such research to the practice of psychology. The faculty believe strongly in the importance of science informing practice and vice versa. As such, we stress the importance of an evidence base for psychological practices, as well as measurement of outcomes in all aspects of practice.
Our department offers two degrees in school psychology. The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) and Ph.D. degrees are approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The Ph.D. program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association.* Both the Ph.D and the Ed.S programs offer an optional Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) emphasis, accredited by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB).
Because of the program’s unique setting in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, students have the opportunity to work closely with Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education and Supervision, Psychology, Educational Psychology and Special Education faculty. The University of Northern Colorado is the primary training institution for educators in Colorado, and thus houses numerous educational support facilities as well as faculty with a variety of skills.
