NHS Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunity

Applications for spring 2009 scholarship funds are invited from full-time undergraduate students majoring in a discipline within the College of Natural and Health Sciences. Funding will be provided to selected students who propose to undertake in spring 2009 a scholarly, service, and/or teaching-related project of academic benefit to themselves and of benefit to the institution. Examples might include but are not restricted to:

• Participating in a faculty-mentored research project in the applicant’s area of study
• Developing and implementing a community service project related to the applicant’s major
• Developing and implementing a peer tutoring service in the applicant’s area of study
• “Shadowing” a faculty member to learn about effective instructional practices in a lab or clinic setting

Applicants will be expected to identify an NHS faculty or staff member who will serve as the project mentor and provide verification to his/her School Director that the project is being undertaken.

Eligibility

Students must be enrolled full-time in spring 2009 with a major in a discipline within the College of Natural and Health Sciences. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.

Scholarship amounts and payment

Applicants may request a maximum of $1,800 for the spring semester. The amount requested should be commensurate with the time to be spent on the project, estimated at $8.00 per hour. For example, $1,200 may be requested for a project requiring approximately 10 hours per week of the 15 week semester. Scholarship funds will be allocated at approximately the mid-point of the spring semester, upon the satisfactory submission of a progress report to the project mentor.

Application procedure (Application cover sheet)

Interested students should develop a written proposal that describes their project in no more than two single-spaced pages. The proposal must identify the faculty or staff member who has agreed to serve as the project mentor, who will sign the application cover sheet to indicate his/her willingness to provide project oversight. Applications are to be submitted by no later than Monday, December 1, 2008 to the Director of the School in which the applicant’s major is located.

Important note: Students receiving financial aid in the current academic year should be aware that receipt of additional scholarship funds may impact their aid and are advised to consult with the Office of Financial Aid about that possibility.
