Audiologists Continue Effort to Educate on Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

An example of a mannequin constructed by UNC faculty and students to raise awareness about noise-induced hearing loss and prevention.

UNC audiologists Deana Meinke and Don Finan, along with their students, will continue efforts to educate on noise-induced hearing loss and prevention with the help of high-tech mannequins they built, beginning with an event at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Hands-on demonstrations of the sound-level equipped mannequins, known as "Jolenes," will be provided to participants during the event, 5-8 p.m. Aug. 29. The mannequins provide a way to see sound levels produced by personal music devices through earbuds and durations that can cause permanent hearing loss when listening to music.

The group will be in Loveland Oct. 4-5 to conduct the outreach.
