UNC's popular series of free Tuesday night outdoor summer concerts in July kicks off its 2014 season July 8, with a performance by the Colorado Chamber Players at 8 p.m. in the Garden Theater on the university's picturesque Central Campus.
A small group of elite woodwind and string players who perform an eclectic repertoire of pieces for chamber ensemble that range from Mozart to marches and tangos, the group's performance at last year's Concert Under the Stars was both refreshing and entertaining.
The season's other concerts include the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, featuring current faculty from UNC's Jazz Studies program, on July 15; The Burroughs, a local soul/funk band composed of UNC students and alumni, on July 22; and Quemando!, one of Denver's best salsa bands, on July 29.
All concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the Garden Theater and are free. Blankets, picnic food and lawn chairs are welcome. The theater is located south of Carter Hall, with free parking available in the lot accessed from 17th St.
The series, sponsored by the College of Performing and Visual Arts' School of Music, has been an integral part of the regional summer music scene since 1931. For additional information, call 351-2993.
