Two years and 6,000 UNC student signatures later, 11th Avenue between 20th and 24th streets has been renamed Bear Boulevard as part of an initiative to better integrate the campus and community and create a sense of Greeley as a college town.
Through Bear Biz, a university-community outreach program formerly known as Operation Bear Aware, students signed up for discounts at local businesses to reach the program's challenge of renaming 11th Avenue if 6,000 students participated.
City of Greeley crews this week installed Bear Boulevard signs along the portion of campus that 11th runs through campus. The university will soon install cloth replicas of the signs in the University Center to help celebrate reaching the program's goal.
Bear Biz is a collaborative effort between the city of Greeley, the Downtown Development Authority, Greeley Chamber of Commerce and UNC. Students worked with the other entities to develop the program.
Now in it's third year, Bear Biz , continues to add businesses that offer discounts to UNC students with their school ID. A list of participting businesses is available at www.bearbizgreeley.com.
To suggest local businesses they'd like to see become part of Bear Biz, students can contact Kim Barbour at 970-352-2566.
