The University of Northern Colorado's Monfort College of Business has selected 17 semifinalists in its Third Annual Entrepreneurial Challenge announced David Thomas, assistant professor of management at the college.
"The semifinalists represent a broad range of start-up businesses and new products," said Thomas. "We are very impressed with the high level of business concepts and plans that have been submitted and believe this year's competition will be the most interesting and exciting yet."
Semifinalists include a heating system to enable year-round growing cycles for flowers and vegetables, a premium apple winery, a gymnastics training facility, a snowboard designer and a hands-free holder for e-readers or tablets.
All semifinalists will present their business plans to judges during the Preliminary Challenge on Wednesday, January 18. They will have 15 minutes to present their business concept to a panel of experts.
After the preliminary challenge, five finalists will be selected to present their business plans during the Monfort College of Business Entrepreneurial Challenge on Thursday, March 8 at the University Center on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. The event is open to the public and the winners will be announced that night during the BRAVO! Entrepreneur Awards, a Northern Colorado Business Report event that the Monfort College of Business is sponsoring. 9News Business Reporter Gregg Moss will serve as emcee for the event and award ceremony. This year's first place winner will receive $18,000, second place $10,000 and third $8,000.
"This promises to be a very exciting day, filled with information, networking opportunities and the chance to observe entrepreneurs as they present their business plans," Thomas added.
