Before your Appointment

Here are tips for preparing for your appointment with the Writing Center.

Consider Your Goals

  • Reflect on your current writing process. When do you tend to need help?
  • Consider your current knowledge of the project you’re working on and what you are still uncertain about.
  • Review any feedback you have received on other writing projects, and decide if any of that feedback may apply to this project as well.

Plan Ahead

  • Review your assignment deadlines and (if possible) schedule your session at least one week before the due dates. Please be aware that midterm week and the last week of classes fill quickly. We encourage writers to be proactive and book appointments in advance when possible.
  • Try to create a list of specific areas you want to address with your writing based on your earlier reflection.
  • Plan on a half-hour session for papers of (5) pages or fewer and an hour for projects of 6-10 pages. If your work is 10+ pages, we recommend multiple appointments.
  • Bring any assignment guidelines or samples the instructor has provided.
  • Be sure to bring any texts relevant to the writing project, like sources you’ve cited or would like to reference.
