About Upward Bound
The Upward Bound program consists of two components:
Academic-year component on the UNC campus with instructional and tutorial services as well as monthly activities. ( Sept. – May: No weekends or school holidays)
- Students attend after-school study sessions (Monday through Thursday) on the UNC campus for 14 weeks during fall and spring academic semesters. Students are encouraged to attend two days each week. Instruction and tutoring support are provided each day in order to help them be successful at the high school level and prepare them for success at the collegiate level. Upperclassmen students are encouraged and supported as they review and apply to: colleges and universities, financial aid and scholarships. A monthly activity/event is also offered to encourage student interaction.
Summer Component on the UNC campus for 6-weeks (nonresidential, Early June – Mid July: No Weekends)
- Students are on the UNC campus during the six-week period from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students are picked up from home between 8 and 8:45 a.m. Continental breakfast is available before classes start at 9. Academic classes offered during the summer include: Language Arts, Math, Science, Foreign Language and Financial Literacy. Volunteer opportunities are also scheduled throughout the summer program. Students have an hour break and eat lunch in the campus dining hall. Students and staff head out for recreation time from 3 to 4 p.m. and then students are delivered home afterwards.
