Your Student Senate

Student Senate is a governing body dedicated to serving the students of UNC. It is composed of 23 members: 8 cabinet members and 15 senators (3 from each college at UNC). Members of other areas of campus also sit on senate including representatives from the Residence Hall Association, Graduate Student Association, UNC Faculty, Professional Administration Staff Council, and Classified Staff Council.

Members of Student Senate hold a variety of responsibilities such as being advocating for students' voices at Board of Trustee, Faculty Senate, and other campus board meetings. In addition to that, Student Senate provides additional funds for undergraduate students to attend conferences, campus departments to start new pilot programs and provide technology to campus.

Overall, Student Senate works collaboratively with various campus partners to represent student interests in an equitable manner. If you have any additional questions please reach out to our members below.

Year: Third Year
Major: Early Childhood Education
Hometown: Commerce City, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: I joined Student Senate because I want to bridge the gap between professors and upper administration with students in this university. I think by being able to build this bond will help students to be able to reach out to the resources around them to better help them during their college experience. Through hearing from other peers in the university about making the environment more accommodating with working to reach more students and allowing them to know what is happening in their university. Through being a part of Student Senate I want to be a way for students to be able to voice their concerns about the university and see that this university is not complete without it's students since the students should be the ones to change their university to make it the most beneficial to themselves and their education. Also I joined because Student Senate is more than just helping students to voice their concerns but actually implementing what the students want and discussing it with the higher administrators to find a solution. Through being a part of Student Senate it creates a way for students to be able to see that their concerns are shared by many others.
Goals for Student Senate: A goal I have for Student Senate is to help serve the student body by working on better communication between the students and higher administration to make sure that the student’s are given multiple resources to help them with any concerns that they might have. My goal is to help serve the student body by creating more student awareness about different events or activities that are happening in the university to help to reach more students. Through reaching more students allows for them to be engaged in events to show them what this university has to offer them and can create experiences for these students that they will look back on and will remember forever as being a university that strives for student success.

Reason for Joining Student Senate: I joined Student Senate to advocate for my peers, for marginalized communities on campus. enrique.benavidez@unco.edu

Year: Second Year
Major: Mexican American Studies
Minor: Human Services
Hometown: Greeley, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: Joining a program that brings together people, and provides a sense of community has always been a goal of mine. And I aim to find that here at UNC, and more specifically in student senate. I am a leader and I am not afraid to voice my thoughts and ideas. Along with that sense of leadership I would do anything for my peers, and would tackle the hard tasks along the way.
Goals for Student Senate: Oftentimes the issues marginalized students face are the same issues that our professors and faculty of color face as well. Professors in the Mexican American Studies program and Africana Studies are not only teaching their students, but they also play the role of advising their students, counseling students, creating cultural activities/providing community engagement, as well as the recruitment of students due to the lack of support from the university. A school that is truly committed to a multicultural philosophy would generally examine the public policies, attitudes, and behaviors of its staff and faculty to determine and understand how these might discriminate against students. My goals would be to advocate for my collage, my professors, and piers. Constantly striving to make a more inclusive place.
Involvement on Campus: Member of Mas society, student organizer, Vice President of Nu Alpha Kappa, Co-founder of Movimento Radical de Cultura (Student Group)

Major: History for Secondary Education
Minor: Anthropology/ Special Education
Hometown: Berthoud, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: I have been inspired by the students to be more of an activist here on campus which is why I've been supporting the causes that mean so much to everyone. I wanted to be a part of student senate so that I can help lead these movements by addressing these issues and having tough conversations. I want to give a voice to those who don't feel they have one.
Goals for Student Senate: While on Student Senate my number one priority will be to make sure every student feels they have a place to express their feelings about issues they see around campus. My goal is to become a change agent here at UNC by listening to students concerns in hopes to resolve issues they see in the community. Only through communication will student morale go up and that’s ultimately what I’m after. The first step in that process is recognizing that we are already a strong, united UNC community.
Involvement on Campus: Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, MAS Society, and the Center of Human Enrichment and I was involved in University 101 and History Club in the past.
