Your Student Senate

Student Senate is a governing body dedicated to serving the students of UNC. It is composed of 23 members: 8 cabinet members and 15 senators (3 from each college at UNC). Members of other areas of campus also sit on senate including representatives from the Residence Hall Association, Graduate Student Association, UNC Faculty, Professional Administration Staff Council, and Classified Staff Council.

Senate holds their meetings every other Wednesday at 5:30pm in the Council Room on the second floor of the University Center. These meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend!

Members of Student Senate hold a variety of responsibilities such as being advocating for students' voices at Board of Trustee, Faculty Senate, and other campus board meetings. In addition to that, Student Senate provides additional funds for undergraduate students to attend conferences, campus departments to start new pilot programs and provide technology to campus.

Overall, Student Senate works collaboratively with various campus partners to represent student interests in an equitable manner. If you have any additional questions please reach out to our members below.

Office Hours
Starting Fall 2020

Year: Third Year
Major:  Accounting & Finance
Minor: Global Business & Leadership Studies
Hometown: Haxtun, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: I joined Student Senate because I think that it is important that our student body has a place they can go to be given their voice back. Often times students can feel overlooked when they share comments and concerns related to the university, but through Student Senate, students are given the opportunity for their voice to be heard. Being a part of Student Senate last year showed me how truly important it is that UNC students have a group of peers they can trust and a safe place that they can voice their concerns. By working with Student Senate, I am able to help ensure students know that they have a voice and that there are people ready and willing to listen. There are also many students who may not want to voice a concern personally, and as members of Student Senate, we are able to be that person that can help students get their concerns out there and heard.
Goals for Student Senate:
As the Director of Finance, one of my goals is to find ways to ensure our ITECH and SPA programs are more accessible to those who qualify for them. Many organizations and groups don’t have access to the information for these programs, so ensuring that those who have the potential to qualify for them are given fair access to the funds is one thing that I hope to work on. Aside from position specific goals, as a member of Student Senate, one of my goals is to advocate for students to ensure that their voices are being heard. My hope is to do this by finding more ways to gain student representation in various organizational meetings around campus. I think it is important that students voices are being heard by all faculty and staff, and my hope is that in working with the elected group on Student Senate, that I will be able to help find opportunities for us to gain student representation in these meetings.

Reason for Joining Student Senate: The reason I joined student senate is because I want to make a difference on campus. I want to be able to advocate for students in spaces we aren't always listened to. I want to continue to make senate a more approachable space where students feel comfortable coming. I want to keep going into student spaces and hearing from more students on the things they want to see changed, I want to hear more stories of times they didn't feel valued on campus so we can change those experiences and make UNC a place where everyone feels welcome. I want to continue to fight for the things students want to see on campus.
Goals for Student Senate: My goals for student senate is making sure we continue to go into student spaces to improve communication. I want to make Student Senate a space where everyone feels welcome to come share their opinions and thoughts on the things we need to improve on campus. I want senate to be a more utilized resource for students and that starts by letting students know we are there for them.

Office Hours
Starting Fall 2020

Year: Third Year
Major: Early Childhood Education
Hometown: Commerce City, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: I joined Student Senate because I want to bridge the gap between professors and upper administration with students in this university. I think by being able to build this bond will help students to be able to reach out to the resources around them to better help them during their college experience. Through hearing from other peers in the university about making the environment more accommodating with working to reach more students and allowing them to know what is happening in their university. Through being a part of Student Senate I want to be a way for students to be able to voice their concerns about the university and see that this university is not complete without it's students since the students should be the ones to change their university to make it the most beneficial to themselves and their education. Also I joined because Student Senate is more than just helping students to voice their concerns but actually implementing what the students want and discussing it with the higher administrators to find a solution. Through being a part of Student Senate it creates a way for students to be able to see that their concerns are shared by many others.
Goals for Student Senate: A goal I have for Student Senate is to help serve the student body by working on better communication between the students and higher administration to make sure that the student’s are given multiple resources to help them with any concerns that they might have. My goal is to help serve the student body by creating more student awareness about different events or activities that are happening in the university to help to reach more students. Through reaching more students allows for them to be engaged in events to show them what this university has to offer them and can create experiences for these students that they will look back on and will remember forever as being a university that strives for student success.

He/Him/His
enrique.benavidez@unco.edu

Office Hours
Starting Fall 2020

Year: Second Year
Major: Mexican American Studies
Minor: Human Services
Hometown: Greeley, CO
Reason for Joining Student Senate: Joining a program that brings together people, and provides a sense of community has always been a goal of mine. And I aim to find that here at UNC, and more specifically in student senate. I am a leader and I am not afraid to voice my thoughts and ideas. Along with that sense of leadership I would do anything for my peers, and would tackle the hard tasks along the way.
Goals for Student Senate: Oftentimes the issues marginalized students face are the same issues that our professors and faculty of color face as well. Professors in the Mexican American Studies program and Africana Studies are not only teaching their students, but they also play the role of advising their students, counseling students, creating cultural activities/providing community engagement, as well as the recruitment of students due to the lack of support from the university. A school that is truly committed to a multicultural philosophy would generally examine the public policies, attitudes, and behaviors of its staff and faculty to determine and understand how these might discriminate against students. My goals would be to advocate for my collage, my professors, and piers. Constantly striving to make a more inclusive place.
Involvement on Campus: Member of Mas society, student organizer, Vice President of Nu Alpha Kappa, Co-founder of Movimento Radical de Cultura (Student Group)

Reason for Joining Student Senate: I have been inspired by the students to be more of an activist here on campus which is why I've been supporting the causes that mean so much to everyone. I wanted to be a part of student senate so that I can help lead these movements by addressing these issues and having tough conversations. I want to give a voice to those who don't feel they have one.
Goals for Student Senate: While on Student Senate my number one priority will be to make sure every student feels they have a place to express their feelings about issues they see around campus. My goal is to become a change agent here at UNC by listening to students concerns in hopes to resolve issues they see in the community. Only through communication will student morale go up and that’s ultimately what I’m after. The first step in that process is recognizing that we are already a strong, united UNC community.
Involvement on Campus: Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, MAS Society, and the Center of Human Enrichment and I was involved in University 101 and History Club in the past.
